Finding Community, Confidence, and Joy Through Pickleball: Joanne's Story
Joanne Cecil first discovered pickleball in 2017, back when plywood paddles were still part of the game. What began as a casual introduction quickly turned into a passion—but it wasn’t until 2020, after moving to the area and starting a new chapter in life, that pickleball truly became something more.

That fall, Joanne joined Ronnie Grandison Sports Academy, and everything changed.

“I didn’t know many people when I moved here,” Joanne shared. “Through pickleball, I found friendships, connection, and a community I didn’t even know I was missing.”

More Than a Game
Joanne describes pickleball as the “great equalizer”—a sport where anyone, at any age or ability level, can step on the court and belong. Though she never considered herself a lifelong athlete, pickleball gave her something powerful: confidence.
“It makes me feel like an athlete,” she said. “And the best part is that it’s exercise that doesn’t feel like exercise because it’s so much fun.”
While she plays outdoors during the summer, Joanne prefers indoor pickleball, where the conditions are consistent and the focus stays on the game, growth, and camaraderie. At RGSA, she found an environment that challenged her while still feeling welcoming and supportive.
Growing Skills - and Confidence
Through lessons and regular play, Joanne saw her game transform. From learning a new drop serve to confidently returning lobs and placing shots with intention, her growth on the court mirrored her growing confidence off of it.

She especially enjoys playing with skilled players who push her game to the next level—welcoming the challenge because it makes her better. “I used to dread certain shots,” she said. “Now I feel comfortable handling them. That progress keeps me coming back.”
Building Community Beyond the Courts
Joanne’s love for pickleball didn’t stop at open play. When neighbors in her community wanted help learning the game, she stepped in—spending Friday mornings teaching fundamentals, explaining scoring, and encouraging new players to simply have fun.

As colder weather approached, Joanne introduced them to RGSA. One by one, they joined—bringing new faces, new friendships, and strengthening the pickleball community even more.
“It’s been such a joy to watch people fall in love with the game,” she said. “Pickleball connects people in ways I never expected.”
Friendships that Last
For Joanne, pickleball has opened doors to lasting friendships—lunch dates, swim parties, neighborhood gatherings, and even creative collaborations. A passionate quilter, she connected with fellow pickleball players who now meet regularly to create charity quilts, including Quilts of Valor for veterans.
“What started on the court turned into something so meaningful,” she shared. “I feel incredibly blessed.”
Why She Keeps Coming Back
From unforgettable comeback wins to unforgettable laughter, Joanne says pickleball has enriched her life physically, mentally, and socially. It’s a place where effort matters, resilience is rewarded, and friendships flourish.
Her advice for anyone new to the sport?
“Just give it a try. You don’t have to be perfect or athletic. Have fun, laugh, and enjoy the people you’re playing with.”
A Community that Feels Like Home
