From Beginner to Community Player: Edsel’s Pickleball Journey
At 46 years old, Edsel has found more than just a sport in pickleball—he’s discovered a welcoming community, a healthier lifestyle, and a game that challenges both his body and mind.
Starting Out
Edsel began playing pickleball two years ago after noticing players at a local park. Curious, he joined in—even as a complete beginner.
“I just told them I was new and didn’t know the rules,” Edsel recalled. “I started on the beginner court, asked questions, and kept learning by watching others play. People gave me feedback, and I stayed open-minded to improve.”
That willingness to learn quickly became one of his strengths. “Everybody’s a student and a teacher,” he added. “What you learn, you should return back to others.”
Finding a Home at RGSA
After his start outdoors, Edsel soon discovered Ronnie Grandison Sports Academy (RGSA) and immediately joined. Now in his second year, he appreciates not just the facility but the people who make it so special.
“The community here is amazing. Everyone smiles, and I feel like I can talk to anyone,” he said. “For me, it’s not about the court itself—it’s about the people. The environment is positive, encouraging, and fun.”
One of his most memorable moments came during his very first week. “I was playing in walking shoes, and Elizabeth looked at me and said, ‘First, you need court shoes!’ That same evening I ordered proper shoes, and the next day I was back with them on. She approved, and we’ve been playing ever since.”
Health Benefits & Growth
Since starting, Edsel has lost 15–20 pounds and has been able to maintain it through consistent play. Beyond the physical benefits, he says pickleball has sharpened his mind.
“Pickleball is easy to learn but hard to master. There’s always something new to improve,” he explained. “It’s a game of strategy as much as skill. Placement matters more than power, and every shot is really just a setup for the next.”
Currently, dinking is his favorite part of the game. “With good dinks, you can place the ball where your opponent is uncomfortable. Then, when the opportunity comes, you speed up and finish the point.”
Balancing Family & Play
Outside of pickleball, Edsel is a father of two young daughters, ages 7 and 9. Weekends are devoted to family time, which is why he hasn’t played in tournaments yet.
“I’m a family man,” he said with a smile. “That’s why I usually play after school drop-offs or during the week. Weekends are for my kids.”
He works in stock trading and is currently studying real estate with plans to become an agent specializing in both residential and commercial properties.
Myths About Pickleball
Like many others, Edsel once thought pickleball was “just for seniors.” Now, he knows the game is for everyone.
“People think it’s an old person’s sport, but you see kids, teens, and pros all playing now. Even world-class athletes who come from tennis admit pickleball is unique—it’s not as easy as it looks.”
Why RGSA?
When asked why he loves playing at RGSA, Edsel didn’t hesitate: “It’s the people. The community here is different. You come not just for the game but for the friendships.”
He even has advice for those who are hesitant: “Don’t be intimidated. You don’t need expensive gear to start—just come, play, and be open to learning. And always remember, the real value is in the people you meet.”
